When a sofa needs cleaning, it helps to look beyond the middle of the seats. The arms, cushion edges, seams and spaces between sections all deserve attention when you describe the work you want done. A textured sofa also needs a material assessment: the way it looks does not tell us everything about how it should be cleaned.
Our upholstery cleaning service in Calgary starts with the furniture’s material, care information and condition. Here is how to prepare a useful description of your sofa and understand the proposed scope.

A textured sofa from AD Spotless’s photo collection. Its visible cushions and seams illustrate the areas to discuss when arranging upholstery cleaning.
Texture is a starting point, not a fabric identification
The sofa in this photograph has a pronounced ribbed texture. That describes its appearance; it does not establish the fibre content, backing, cleaning instructions or suitability for a particular treatment.
Keep the care label or manufacturer’s information available if you have it. Tell us about previous cleaning attempts, product use and any existing damage. We assess the material and condition before choosing an appropriate method. Our guide to upholstery fabric suitability explains why sofas that look similar may need different care.
Describe the whole piece you want cleaned
A clear description helps prevent a misunderstanding about what “clean the couch” includes. Start with the furniture type and size: sofa, loveseat, sectional or chair, plus the number of seats or pieces. Then identify the areas you want assessed.
- Seat and back cushions: mention whether they are attached or removable.
- Arms and head-contact areas: point out visible marks or heavier buildup.
- Seams and spaces between cushions: tell us about crumbs, pet hair or debris.
- The sofa base: explain whether you want accessible areas beneath removable cushions included.
- Other upholstered items: list matching chairs, an ottoman or additional furniture separately.
Point out loose seams or damaged areas before the work begins. Do not force an attached cushion loose to create access.
A removable cover is not automatically washable
A zip can allow access to a cushion without being an instruction to put its cover in a washing machine. Follow the manufacturer’s care information and discuss any uncertainty before removing or washing covers.
For the appointment, remove blankets, toys and personal items. Leave the care information available and tell us where you have noticed problems. You do not need to experiment with another cleaning product before the visit; the history of any products already used is more useful to the assessment.
How we approach suitable fabric upholstery
For upholstery suitable for our deep steam cleaning method, our five-step process is dry vacuuming, pre-treatment, scrubbing and agitation, deep steam cleaning, and extraction. The treatment is selected for the material and its condition, and the work is agreed for the pieces you are booking.
Dry vacuuming comes first. It addresses loose material before the remaining cleaning steps. Tell us about pet hair in seams or beneath removable cushions so those concerns can be discussed as part of the scope.
Our pet-hair removal guide for sofas and chairs covers suitable vacuum attachments and care between professional visits.
We will do our best to improve stains, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Stain origin, fabric condition and previous treatments matter. Ink, dye and very old stains may not be removable, and cleaning cannot repair permanent colour loss or damaged material. Read more about what upholstery cleaning may improve.
Give the sofa time to dry
Plan another place to sit after the appointment. Keep freshly cleaned upholstery uncovered and follow the aftercare guidance for the particular piece. Do not put blankets or throws back while the material is damp.
Drying is affected by the cushions, fabric and room conditions. A promise that every sofa will be ready at the same time would be misleading. Our upholstery drying guide helps you plan for normal use again.
Questions to settle before booking
Can a photograph show whether the sofa needs a particular treatment?
A photograph can illustrate the piece and visible condition, but it does not confirm the material, the source of a mark or the appropriate cleaning method. The assessment and available care information guide the treatment.
Can you clean the sofa and carpet during the same booking?
Tell us you want both services when requesting a quote. List the upholstered pieces and the carpeted areas so we can confirm the scope and availability. See our carpet-cleaning service for the carpet process.
