How Often Should You Professionally Clean Upholstery in Calgary?

There is no single schedule that fits every sofa, sectional, chair or household. How often upholstery should be professionally cleaned depends on daily use, pets, children, fabric colour, visible soil, odours and how quickly the furniture collects body oils and dust.

A Practical Cleaning Schedule

At AD Spotless, we use 12 to 18 months as a broad planning estimate for many households. The ranges below are practical starting points, not manufacturer requirements. Follow the furniture maker’s care instructions and adjust the timing to the fabric, daily use and actual soil buildup.

  • Low-use furniture: often every 18 to 24 months.
  • Daily-use sofas and sectionals: often around every 12 months.
  • Homes with pets or children: often every 6 to 12 months depending on hair, spills, soil and odours.
  • Light-coloured upholstery: may show soil earlier and benefit from more frequent care.

Signs Your Upholstery Is Ready for Cleaning

A calendar is useful, but the condition of the furniture matters more. Consider professional cleaning when you notice darkening on armrests and headrests, food or drink spills, pet hair, persistent odours, dull fabric, visible traffic areas or oily high-contact spots.

Why Waiting Too Long Can Make Cleaning Harder

Body oils, food residue, soil and pet contamination become more difficult to treat as they remain in the fabric. Regular vacuuming helps with loose debris, but it does not remove everything that bonds to upholstery fibres over time.

Cleaning earlier does not guarantee every stain will disappear, but it can improve the chance of a better overall result and reduce heavy buildup before it becomes more difficult to treat.

Homes With Pets

Pet hair and dander can settle deep into cushions and seams, while accidents may penetrate below the visible fabric. If urine reaches foam or internal padding, surface cleaning can improve the upholstery but may not completely remove a source that is deeper inside the furniture.

For pet households, frequent dry vacuuming and quicker professional attention after accidents are usually better than waiting until odour becomes severe.

What Professional Cleaning Cannot Guarantee

Professional cleaning can improve normal soil and many stains, but complete removal is not guaranteed. Paint, ink and dye transfer may respond to suitable treatment depending on the fabric, stain and previous cleaning attempts. Cleaning cannot reverse permanent colour loss, bleach damage or physically damaged fibres.

How to Keep Upholstery Cleaner Between Visits

  • Vacuum cushions, seams and high-contact areas regularly.
  • Address fresh spills promptly without aggressive scrubbing.
  • Avoid mixing strong household chemicals on upholstery.
  • Rotate removable cushions where appropriate so wear is more even.
  • Tell your technician about previous stain products or cleaning attempts.
